Eurovision: after its victory, is Ukraine obliged to organize the competition?

2022-05-14T23:37:26.167Z

Tradition has it that the victorious country hosts the European Song Contest the following year on its land. But in the midst of war

The bettors were right.

For the third time in its history, Ukraine has won the Eurovision Song Contest, after the successes of Ruslana with "Wild Dances" in 2004 and Jamala and "1944" in 2016. The title "Stefania" of the group Kalush Orchestra scored 631 points.

A triumph in particular thanks to the 439 points of the public.

A record.

A long-planned victory since the bookmakers had ranked Ukraine well ahead of the competition for several weeks, even before knowing the names of the local representatives!

But now, one of the questions is to know where Eurovision will take place in 2023. Because if it is customary for the winning country to be the organizer of the next edition, it is difficult to imagine the whole of Europe go to kyiv or any other Ukrainian city in a year for this celebration, while the country is currently suffering the full brunt of the war led by Russia.

But custom does not mean constraint.

Quite the contrary.

“Winning the competition simply gives priority to the organization of the following year, explains Benoît Blaszczyk, secretary of the association of French Eurofans and a great specialist in the event.

There is no obligation to host the contest when you are victorious.

A 67th edition in France?

The regulations even provide that in the event of refusal or impossibility, another country takes over.

"Generally, one of the countries of the Big Five

(the five largest contributors to the European Broadcasting Union, which organizes Eurovision, namely France, Italy, Spain, Germany and the United Kingdom)

“, specifies the regular of the European competition.

A situation certainly rare but not unprecedented in the history of the competition, even if the refusals were generally justified by financial impossibility.

In 1960, 1963, 1972 and 1974, the United Kingdom thus took over from the Netherlands, France, Monaco and Luxembourg.

Same thing in 1980 when, after a second consecutive Israeli victory, the Netherlands organized the contest in The Hague.

In the past, Ukraine has already organized Eurovision twice, following its victories.

In 2005, the Palais des sports in kyiv, with a capacity of 10,000 seats, saw Helena Paparizou shine for Greece.

Twelve years later, the competition was once again held in kyiv, but in the international exhibition center, in the Livoberezhna district.

A place capable of accommodating 11,000 people.

And who hailed the victory of Salvador Sobral, the first winner in the history of Portugal in this competition.
