During the ballot, Philippe Dupouy, 61 years old and until then socialist departmental councilor of the canton Gimone-Arrats, collected 22 votes against 12 for his opponent of the Republicans (LR), Isabelle Tintané.

The left has a comfortable majority in the Gers, controlling 11 of the 17 cantons.

Philippe Dupouy pledged on Tuesday to fight against medical deserts and greeted his predecessor "

who worked for 23 years for the good of the Gers

".

At the beginning of January, Philippe Martin, ex-Minister of Ecology under François Hollande and former prefect, was given a two-year suspended prison sentence, and declared ineligible for three years, his ex-wife having benefited from a fictitious job as a parliamentary assistant between 2002 and 2013. In addition to a fine, he must reimburse more than 400,000 euros in undue remuneration to the National Assembly.

Following his conviction, Philippe Martin announced that he was retiring from political life and resigned from the presidency of the departmental council, as well as from his position as adviser to the Gers.
