The long-term care insurance has gotten into financial difficulties because of the corona costs.

Now she has received a billion dollar loan from the federal government to bridge the increased costs.

The Federal Office for Social Security made one billion euros available for long-term care insurance, as announced by the Federal Ministry of Health.

The amount was transferred to the compensation fund of the social long-term care insurance.

Long-term care insurance is suffering from liquidity bottlenecks, which are mainly due to the pandemic-related expenses for the protection of those in need of care, employees in care and family carers.

This includes costs for the care protection screen and corona tests.

Long-term care insurance had already closed 2021 with a deficit of 1.35 billion euros.

At the end of 2021, long-term care insurance still had funds of 6.85 billion euros, which corresponds to 1.6 monthly expenses.

In the first six months of 2022, however, there was already a deficit of 1.95 billion euros.

As a result, funds at the end of June were only 4.9 billion euros.

With the introduction of the new test regulation at the end of June, dissatisfaction with long-term care insurance increased.

This stipulates a personal contribution of three euros for a citizen test.

However, tests to protect risk groups, including people in need of care, are excluded.

An increase in the deficit was already expected when it was introduced.

1.18 billion for corona tests in six months

According to the information provided, the care protection umbrella caused costs of 1.15 billion euros in the first half of 2022.

This included compensation payments that old people’s homes receive for every place that is not occupied due to corona, but also the extended care support allowance for caregiving relatives.

The corona tests cost 1.18 billion euros in the first six months of the year.

In order to secure the long-term finances of long-term care insurance, the Ministry of Health says it is working on reform proposals that are to be presented this year.
