Alex Miller, a flight expert and founder of the UpgradedPoints travel website, reinforced Patrick's remarks, saying that so far there have been numerous flares on flights from phones that have slipped into the slots between the seats.
He is right: According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), 346 reports of air travel incidents including smoke, fire, extreme heat or explosion due to lithium batteries (those in most - if not all - smartphones) were recorded as of December 2021. The FAA added that Some of these reports are related to phones left stuck between seats.
In one case in 2017, a man's phone caught fire on a United Airlines flight after he fell between his seat and the one next to it.
Another incident in 2018 involved a passenger on a Delta Airlines plane who was forced to move to another seat while a flight attendant pulled the smoke-up phone from his seat.

This is not the only way your phone can be in danger of fire: the device may catch fire even if it gets stuck between the seats and you accidentally try to move or adjust your seat.
"This may happen because when your seat moves - it can smash your phone's lithium battery, which can cause a fire," Alex explained.
There are several ways to minimize the risk of the device catching fire.
Patrick added: "To avoid this scenario, avoid placing your phone near the edge of the seat, from where it can slip or fall easily."
Alex added: "Always keep your phone in your hands (or in another protected and familiar location) during takeoff and landing to prevent the phone from slipping there."
Both experts noted that it is important to always inform the stewards about any of the above situations and let them address the issue, as they are skilled at doing so.
