Against the background of growing tensions between Jerusalem and Moscow, for the first time since the attacks in Syria began, it was reported that a Russian S-300 battery fired missiles at Israeli Air Force planes.

The unusual incident took place last Friday, when according to foreign publications, Israel attacked targets in Syria.

The timing of the attack - Friday at 8 pm - is quite unusual, and according to the publications, the site that was hit by the attack was also significant: a Sars site that deals with exactly Hezbollah rockets.

It is no secret that during the attacks attributed to the IDF in Syria, the Syrians are firing surface-to-air missiles at Air Force fighter jets.

The number of missiles fired is significant, but these are outdated TKA systems, and with the exception of one case in February 2018 in which an Air Force "storm" plane was shot down, the Syrian TKA fails to thwart the activities of the Israeli Air Force.

Russia has transferred several advanced S-300 systems to Syria in recent years, but in Israel it has been estimated until recently that the advanced batteries are in Russian hands only, and therefore do not threaten Air Force aircraft.

In light of this, developments over the past weekend are particularly troubling.

Israel will have to wait for the next attacks in Syria to understand whether this is really a trend, and a Russian signal that could infringe on Israel's air freedom of action in Syria, or whether it is an exceptional and one-time case.
