Faltermaier sweeps everyone off the plate

Johannes Faltermaier has secured the title of the South Bavarian Table Tennis Champion of the U19 youth, which was played for the first time.

Putzbrunn/Erding – As of this year, the age limit has been increased by one year, which further improves the performance of the 16-year-old from Erding.

The 14 best table tennis juniors in southern Bavaria met in Putzbrunn in the district of Munich to determine their champion.

The game was played in two groups of seven, and the four best in each group met again in the final round.

In his first games, Faltermaier clearly noticed the three-month break from competition and the stress caused by the school-leaving exams.

In the first three matches against Fabian Gallitzendörfer (DJK Altdorf), Andis Qeku (FC Bayern Munich) and national student player Jonas Rinderer (TV Ruhmannsfelden), the Erdinger showed one or the other wobble, but ultimately won three times safely with 3:1 sets.

Things got much better from then on, and he convincingly won his last three games in the group against Davis Bruns (TSV Weilheim), Tim Walter (MTV Ingolstadt) and Maxim Haag (TSV Gräfelfing) 3-0.

Thus Faltermaier had qualified for the final round with a pristine white vest.

His first opponent there was his club colleague Fredy Mülders from TTC Freising-Lerchenfeld.

He had lost two games in the preliminary round, but against players who later could not qualify for the final round, and thus started the final round with three wins and no defeats.

Ultimately, this should be the duel for later tournament victory.

Faltermaier narrowly won the first set with 11:9 points, clearly won the second set and achieved a smooth 3:0 victory with a tight 15:13 in the third set.

Against Lars Kassubek (also TTC Freising-Lerchenfeld) a lack of concentration cost Erdinger the second set.

But then he showed himself from his best side again and won the following sets 11:1 and 11:8.

In the penultimate duel, the opponent was Florian Meindl (TSV Gräfelfing), who found no means against the enthusiastic Erdinger and had to take a clear 0:3 smack.

In the last game against Rufus Funkert (FC Bayern Munich) there was still no decision on who would win the tournament.

Mülders and Funkert each had a defeat, only Faltermaier was still undefeated and could have missed out on winning the tournament if they lost.

He promptly lost the first set with 12:14 points.

However, his mother Conny, who looked after him throughout the tournament, found the right words during the break.

In the next three sentences (11:5, 11:6, 11:7), son Johannes showed who was in charge of the plate and became a deserved champion.
