Caregivers who support an elderly, sick or disabled loved one can now benefit from a compensated three-month leave.

The measure, approved unanimously by the National Assembly in October 2019, comes into force this Thursday, October 1.

Concretely, salaried carers, self-employed workers and public officials can claim a leave of a maximum duration of three months which can be divided, and which can be renewed, up to one year over the entire career of the employee.

Around four million people affected

A caregiver as a couple is compensated up to 43 euros per day.

While an isolated caregiver receives 52 euros.

This amount is close to that granted for sick child leave.

This allowance is paid by the family allowance funds or the Mutualité sociale agricole.

According to official figures, 8.3 million people in France regularly help a loved one with loss of autonomy.

Almost one in two is employed, or around four million people.
