The local group Rottach-Egern of the water rescue service organizes a family festival.

It's not just about fun: the proceeds should go to an old jetty and the youth.

Rottach-Egern – 2021 started with bitter news for the water guards in Rottach-Egern.

They were in the process of repairing the 22-year-old footbridge at the service hut on the Schorn.

"It was falling apart, a security guard could no longer have been carried out on it," recalls Chairman Jan Zangenfeind.

"With every deck board that we removed, we realized that the entire substructure was dilapidated." It didn't help, the bridge had to go and a new one made.

The Bammer company from Gmund was there quickly and helped the local group out of trouble despite the busy schedule.

A new jetty was quickly built, and with a lot of personal effort by the members, the watch operation was able to start on time on the new jetty.

However, the costs were significant.

"We started a large-scale appeal for donations," reports Zangenfeind, "but unfortunately it didn't bring the desired success." Despite a few donors from the Tegernsee Valley and the support of the communities of Rottach-Egern, Tegernsee and Bad Wiessee, the water rescue service stayed on almost two-thirds of the costs.

Zangenfeind even approached a rich neighbor.

The Russian oligarch Alisher Usmanov, who in addition to his four villas also owns a boathouse on the Schorn, was written to by Zangenfeind.

"There was no reaction," the chairman recalled.

"And things were constantly being repaired there." Meanwhile, nobody wants anything to do with Usmanov, except construction companies who are still waiting for their money.

The water rescue service from the jetty construction is still missing 20,000 euros in the till.

"Of course, the Miesbach district association advanced the money," reports Zangenfeind, "but refinancing would be desirable." In addition, there is a lack of money in other areas: especially for youth work.

“There are still a lot of construction sites here,” admits the chairman, citing the lack of equipment and training material as examples.

The focus is on youth.

“They are the security guards of the future.” The local group currently has 180 members, 50 of whom are active, and 20 members form the service team in groups of three.

About 40 children and young people take part in the training.

Despite good work under the leadership of Heide Clauss and Sylvana Wetzl, it is difficult to keep the youngsters in line.

"Two years of the pandemic and the meetings and training sessions that were canceled as a result have left their mark," says Zangenfeind.

The lack of the Wiesseer Badepark is also a problem. Training can only take place in Rottach-Egern during the summer months.

There, the appointments are occupied to the last place, the trainers are on duty seven days a week.

Zangenfeind would like to reward this commitment - with T-shirts, sweaters and pants.

But a sponsor is still being sought who can attach his logo to the youth clothing.

There is a lot to do at the local group and at the water rescue service in general.

"Promoting and motivating young people is not always easy," says Zangenfeind.

Also because the school demands are getting higher and it is difficult to find time for voluntary work.

"Nevertheless, we are confident that tomorrow we will have an operational team to watch over the lake." It starts as planned on June 1st, but the hut will be occupied on May 21st and 22nd due to a larger regatta.

Now it's time to get the money in the till.

On Saturday, May 28th, from 11 a.m., there will be a family party at the Hütte am Schorn, not just for the members.

All interested citizens of the municipality and in the valley are given an understanding of the work on the lake on this occasion.

Above all, however, plug fish are grilled.

They can be pre-ordered on z 0 15 90 / 1 34 29 87 or by email to ww.ogre@web.de.

The proceeds go to youth work and financing of the new footbridge.
