FIFA has approved the use of semi-automated technology to detect intrusion during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
FIFA explained in a statement on its official website that the new technology aims to speed up arbitration decisions, make them more reliable and speed up the detection of intrusion after the adoption of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) at the Mondia for Russia 2018.
The Federation indicated that the new technology that will be used in the 2022 World Cup depends on 12 cameras placed in the ceiling of the stadium to monitor 29 data points for each player about 50 times per second, as a sensor placed in the center of the ball sends data to the viewing room 500 times per second, which makes it possible Determining when the ball is played is much more accurate than what the human eye can do.
The federation pointed out that by integrating this data and using artificial intelligence, an alert will be sent to the video referees every time the ball is received by an attacker who was in an offside position at the time of the pass and within a few seconds it will be up to them to manually check the moment of the pass as well as the offside line before Inform the main referee who will make the final decision.
According to the International Federation, the images will then be converted into 3D animation that can be displayed on the big screen inside the stadium in order to allow the fans inside the stadium to better understand the refereeing decisions.
