The HSG Würm-Mitte will start again in the 3rd women's handball league in less than a month.

Until then it's TTT: tactics training, team building, training camp.

Würmtal – In just under a month it starts again: On Saturday, September 3rd, the third division handball team at HSG Würm-Mitte will start the new season with a Bavarian derby at TSV Haunstetten, who came third last year.

Last season, the Würmtaler Wildkatzen secured their place in the league with a strong final sprint in the so-called remaining round, and they want to confirm this performance in the coming season.

The joint preparation in the hall has been going on since the beginning of July.

HSG has already played three friendlies: against HT Munich, Mainz 05 and TSV Schwabmünchen.

“Things are going well so far.

The break was short and a lot is still there,” says Wildkatzen trainer Miriam Hirsch, who is about to start her second season as head coach.

3rd League South: The squad of the HSG Würm-Mitte remains almost completely together

There was no major upheaval in the summer, almost all the players from the previous season's squad are still there.

However, there are still question marks behind the appearances of Sara Markovic, who is very busy professionally, and Belma Beba, who is still struggling with an injury to her throwing hand.

Vera Laipple is no longer available.

Her comeback in a staff-tense phase of the pre-season was not planned from the outset.

But the HSG can look forward to another familiar face: After a year at TSV Herrsching, Miriam Becker decided to return to the Würmtal.

As a right backcourt player, she could be on the field together with her younger sister, right winger Annika Becker.

However, after suffering a cruciate ligament rupture in 2021/22, it is probably not an option for the start of the season.

Also new to the squad are two talented young HSG players, 16-year-old goalkeeper Sophie Baur and 15-year-old backcourt player Leila Ott.

3rd League South: The aim of the Würmtaler Wildkatzen is to stay up in the league

The performances shown at the end of the last round make Hirsch confident for the coming season.

"We can build on that," she says, but warns at the same time: "That doesn't mean anything for the next season.

It won't be easy.

Behind Gröbenzell, Haunstetten and Wolfschlugen many teams are on an equal footing.”

Since the leagues are to be further reduced after the corona-related increase, there are numerous relegations.

A place in the top seven of the eleven-team Süd-Staffel is necessary for direct relegation, eighth place is likely to entitle you to a similar additional round as in the previous year.

"Our goal is seventh place," announced Hirsch.

3rd League South: New handball rules as an additional challenge

In order to achieve this, a lot of work is currently being done on the basics.

At the same time, the Wildkatzen also want to develop their game further and have to adapt to some minor rule changes.

The probably most drastic concerns the throw.

After conceding a goal, the player no longer has to stand on the center line when throwing in, but only stay in the center circle, the diameter of which has also been increased from three to four meters.

The so-called "fast middle", i.e. an attack aimed at immediate scoring after the throw-in, is therefore easier to achieve.

“We still have to deal with that tactically,” announces Hirsch.

3rd League South: Würm-Mitte players get fitness in beach handball

During the preparations in the summer, many players are also involved in up-and-coming beach handball on sand.

In addition to Carolin Hübner, who recently won the gold medal at the World Games in the USA with the German team (we reported), Kristina Krecken, Paula Reips and Sophie Baur ran for various DHB selection teams.

Several tournaments of the club teams are currently taking place, including the German championship in Cuxhaven this weekend.

That's definitely more fun for the players than a running session

Hirsch is not only very happy for Hübner and the other players (“Such experiences bring a lot”), but also sees the beach activities positively overall.

"That's definitely more fun for the players than a running session," says Würm-Mitte's trainer.
