A dozen houses burned down and five people were injured in a major forest fire in the north-western Peloponnese, near the city of Patras, according to a provisional assessment of the Greek civil protection.

The five injured, with respiratory problems, were transported to hospitals in the region, civil protection said.

The hospitals of Patras and Aigio had been put on alert from Saturday, July 31 at noon to receive any wounded, as well as the coast guard so that they could rescue bathers who could be suffocated by smoke.

Five villages were evacuated due to this devastating fire which broke out with scorching temperatures.

145 firefighters, 50 trucks, 8 water bombers and helicopters were mobilized to fight this fire in the Zeria region, according to firefighters.

The authorities sent alert messages to cell phones during the day on Saturday July 31 to warn residents of the need to evacuate the villages of Zeria, Kamares, Achaias and Labiri.

Loggos seaside resort evacuated

At the end of the Saturday afternoon, the seaside resort of Loggos was also evacuated, the fire having spread towards the coast.

The inhabitants and tourists were transported by the port police to the port of Aigio, a few kilometers from the village.

The highway in the affected area as well as the Rio-Antirio bridge connecting the Peloponnese and mainland Greece were closed to traffic, according to the Greek news agency ANA.

Dryed up by the heat, the Greek forests are victims of fires every summer, fed by strong winds.

Greece has been facing a new heat wave since Friday, with temperatures hovering between 42 and 44 degrees according to weather services.
