(ANSA) - ROME, MAY 16 - The first world conference on the rights of lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transsexuals will be hosted in the United Kingdom in June 2022, an initiative taken by Downing Street as part of its commitments towards the Coalition of 42 Countries for Equality rights. The Guardian reports it.

The "Safe To Be Me" event is expected to be the largest of its kind and will invite politicians, activists and officials from around the world to attend London for two days, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of London's first Gay Pride.

The conference will be used to support equality in the UK and abroad and, the government said, "make progress on legislative reform, tackle violence and discrimination and ensure equal access to public services for LGBT people ".

"This will be the first time a global event of this magnitude has been held and I hope it will help guide collective action for real change," said Nick Herbert, event chairman and special envoy to the LGBTQ + rights prime minister.

Under the presidency of Boris Johnson, the British government has been criticized by activists and human rights NGOs for backtracking on the rights of trans people. (HANDLE).
