Traveling to Nice this Tuesday for the Assises of the economy of the sea, the Head of State has promised 50 million euros in aid to the fishing sector.

Emmanuel Macron announced Tuesday, before the Assises de la mer in Nice, a new envelope of around 50 million euros for the fishing sector, faced with the consequences of Brexit, as part of the recovery plan.

"

We have done the maximum and we will continue to do the maximum

" to help fishermen while the British are accused of not applying the compromise on fishing reached at the end of 2020, said the head of state.

Recovery plan and "

pragmatism

"

The European Commission must ensure that "

what has been signed is well respected by our British neighbors, without unnecessary provocation and without reviving, if I may say so, the glorious Franco-British naval history since some apparently wanted to do that

" , he added, along with the Minister of the Sea Annick Girardin, on the first day of the major annual meeting of professionals from the maritime sectors.

Stressing that the envelope of around fifty million euros earmarked for the modernization of the fleet and auctions in the post-Covid 19 recovery plan had been "

consumed

", he announced that the government would "

fill in a new an additional 50 million euros envelope to be able to move forward

These measures aim to strengthen France in the maritime sector, in particular with aid to accelerate the ecological transition of merchant ships. "

It is a redeployment in the case of the recovery plan and it is pragmatism,

" said Emmanuel Macron two months before the Assises de la Pêche scheduled for November 18 and 19 in Saint-Pol-de-Léon and Roscoff in Brittany.

Fishing was the hardest part of the negotiation of the post-Brexit trade agreement concluded at the end of December between the European Union and the United Kingdom. The catches of EU fishermen in UK waters amount to € 650 million each year. The compromise reached is a source of tension: European fleets will have to give up 25% of their catches in British waters at the end of a transition period running until June 2026.
