Football: Jack Charlton, 1966 world champion and Bobby's brother, died

Jack Charlton died Friday "at home in Northumberland, with his family by his side," said the family of the English central defender in a press release from Leeds United, the club where he spent his entire career.

The central defender in the 35 caps with the England team (6 goals) marked the history of the Yorkshire club with a record of 773 games played in 23 years. With 96 goals, he remains the 9th top scorer in club history.

Arrived in Leeds at only 15 years old in 1950, Jack Charlton played his first pro match in 1953. He won a title of champion of England, two Cups of England and two Cups of the fair cities, between 1968 and 1972.

Brother of the legendary Bobby Charlton, more discreet in the media, the two men shared a conflictual relationship, against a background of family quarrels. The central defender also made his mark as Eire coach, earning the nickname "Saint Jack". In ten years, he has led the Republic of Ireland twice to the World Cup, rising to the quarterfinals in 1990 in Italy, two years after a victory over England in the Euro-1988 that has been remembered. .
