Football: Quincy Promes, Dutch international, prosecuted for attempted murder

Dutch international striker Spartak Moscow, 29, will soon have to answer to his country's courts for an assault


More than a year after the facts, Quincy Promes is caught by the Dutch justice.

"The Amsterdam public prosecutor has decided to prosecute a 29-year-old man from Amsterdam (...) for attempted murder and aggravated assault," the Amsterdam prosecutor's office announced in a statement, without giving any information. name.

The date of the hearing has not yet been set.

According to the prosecution, "the victim, a cousin of the suspect, was seriously injured in the knee" during a fight between the two men at the end of July 2020 during a family reunion in the town of Abcoude, neighboring Amsterdam.

For the Dutch media, there is little doubt that the suspect is Quincy Promes, 29, who was arrested in December 2020 for stabbing assault.

In its statement, the prosecution indicates that the suspect was released two days after his arrest, after being questioned on the order of the prosecutor.

At the time of his arrest, the player's lawyer had refuted these accusations.

“Promes formally denies the accusation.

He was not on the scene at the time of the stabbing ”, declared Me Manon Aalmoes to the Dutch ANP Agency, before specifying that the player“ fully cooperates with the investigation ”.

The Amsterdam-born Dutch international was playing for Ajax at the material time. He returned earlier this year to Spartak Moscow, where he had already played four seasons, from 2014 to 2018. He was part of the Dutch selection during the Euro last June but no longer wore the jersey of the selection from. Promes carries a sentence ranging from two to three and a half years in prison.

The prosecution has not yet officially confirmed and the date of the trial is therefore not known.

In a statement quoted by the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, Spartak Moscow ensures that his striker is "fully focused on the matches to come", including a Europa League meeting against Napoli on Wednesday.

"His lawyers are handling the case," continues the club, which specifies that it has not received any official request from the competent authorities.
