Football World Cup in Qatar: reduced hours and telework in the public sector to avoid "congestion"

2022-10-05T22:14:37.484Z

Public sector employees and school children will only work in the morning, before and during the competition. The government justifies this

Public sector employees in Qatar will only work between 7 a.m. and 11 a.m. and 80% telework from November 1 to December 19, to reduce the risk of congestion with the arrival of World Cup-2022 spectators, announced the government on Wednesday.

The security and health sectors as well as private companies are not affected, said the spokesman of the government communication service (GCO), Dr. Mohammed bin Nuwaymi Al Hajri, on Twitter.

From November 1 to 17, public and private schools will be open between 7 a.m. and 12 p.m., closing earlier than normal.

School holidays are then scheduled until December 22.

The Doha Corniche, where the main fan zones will be set up during the tournament, will be pedestrian-only from November 1 to December 19.

Usually very busy, this axis of circulation along the sea connects the main districts of the capital Doha.

Lack of rooms in the tiny emirate

Qatar expects more than one million visitors during the tournament, from November 20 to December 18.

Qatar's World Cup organizers promise all accommodation will be ready on time, as some fans have already complained about prices and lack of room availability in the tiny emirate of just under three million people .

Other Gulf cities, particularly Dubai, are reporting a World Cup boom fueled by fans reluctant to book accommodation in Qatar, partly also due to the perception, disputed by Doha, of non-respect of the rights of the LGBTQ community and lack of alcohol.

Qatar continues for its part to prepare a range of accommodation to cope with the influx of visitors.

So, prefabricated cabins, located near the airport, can be rented for about $200 a night for two people.
