The fire rages on the Costa del Sol in southern Spain and has already destroyed around 6,000 hectares of forest within four days - the equivalent of an area of more than 8,000 football fields.

Because of the fires, some communities had to be evacuated on Sunday.

Elderly residents in particular were taken to an emergency shelter in the city of Ronda.

The number of people who have brought helpers out of their homes and to safety since Thursday has risen to a total of 1620, according to the authorities.

Heat of up to 30 degrees, drought and strong winds make fire fighting work in the province of Malaga in Andalusia difficult.

A total of around 6,000 firefighters and other rescue workers were involved in the operations, including soldiers.

The authorities are currently assuming arson as the fire broke out in several places at the same time.

A firefighter was killed on Thursday.
