Tirschenreuth was Germany's number 1 corona hotspot for a while. Now a study shows how serious the situation in the Bavarian district really was.

Even in the Heinsberg district, where the first major outbreak occurred in Germany, the incidence last April was not as high as in the Upper Palatinate district.

Former Corona hotspot Tirschenreuth: Study reveals unreported numbers

Now a scientific study gives further insights into the situation at the time: According to this, the number of unreported cases of Sars-CoV-2 * infected people in the Tirschenreuth district in the first half of 2020 was 80 percent.

The study started last spring.

According to this, for every person who had been registered with an infection by means of a test *, there were four people who had antibodies and were thus infected without knowing it.

At 92 percent, the number of unreported cases was highest in the 14 to 20 year old age group.

6000 people aged 14 and over were selected at random and asked to participate.

4,200 of them had participated, as the study director announced on Wednesday.

The study was commissioned by the Ministry of Science in April 2020 and is being carried out by experts from the University Clinics of Regensburg * and Erlangen.

The study is still ongoing and further results are pending.
