In the eleventh Formula 1 race of the season, Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas secured the 14th pole position of his career ahead of his teammate Lewis Hamilton.
Mercedes remains unbeaten in qualifying this year.
The Dutchman Max Verstappen from Red Bull starts from third place at the Grand Prix of the Eifel.
If Hamilton wins the race on Sunday (3:10 p.m., live ticker: SPIEGEL.de, TV: RTL, Sky), he will set Michael Schumacher's record with 91 wins.
The four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel finished eleventh in the Ferrari.
It was the eighth time this season that Vettel missed the final knockout round.
Team-mate Charles Leclerc finished fourth.
Nico Hülkenberg made his next surprising Formula 1 comeback at the Nürburgring.
The 33-year-old replaces Lance Stroll at Racing Point, who had canceled due to malaise before the final training session.
The 178-time Grand Prix participant did not get past 20th and last place.
He was less than half a second missing to reach the second qualifying segment.
"It's not an easy story without any preparation. But I'm a racing driver, that's my job. You have to grab a chance like this," said Hulkenberg at Sky and added, with a view to the race: "You can't use iron bars Break my hand. I just have to do my thing. "
