Four people were killed and a fifth was injured in an avalanche on a snow-covered volcano in Ecuador, Chimborazo (center), emergency services said on Sunday.
"We confirm that four people were killed and another was injured,"
relief officials said, noting that a total of twelve people were caught in the avalanche.
"A group of people were climbing the snow-covered Chimborazo when an avalanche hit it at 6,100 meters"
above sea level, they added in a statement.
"Initial information shows a group of twelve people,"
they said.
Chimborazo is a snow-capped volcano in Ecuador culminating at 6,263 meters above sea level and located near Riobamba, about 180 km south of Quito.
It is the highest peak of the Ecuadorian Andes.
