There have been cases in France where Muslim men tried to have their marriage annulled for allegedly missing their wife's virginity.
Now the government wants to make so-called virginity certificates a criminal offense.
Doctors who issue such certificates face one year imprisonment and a fine of 15,000 euros.
This emerges from a bill with which the government wants to fight Islamism.
According to the French Interior Ministry, "any practice that aims to certify the virginity of a woman" is to be banned.
The ministry handed the guidelines for the law to parliament on Tuesday evening, the text is available to the AFP news agency.
Various French media such as "Midi Libre" or "France Info" also report on the bill.
The government also wants to take action against associations that "exert psychological or physical pressure on people and especially on children".
These clubs should be more easily banned.
In addition, compulsory school attendance should apply to children aged three and over.
Last week, President Emmanuel Macron criticized the fact that girls in particular were specifically kept away from schools, were not allowed to do sports and had to wear headscarves.
Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin wants to present the law to the cabinet on December 9th.
The plans do not go far enough for the right wing political camp.
The right-wing populist Marine Le Pen called, among other things, for a ban on "mass immigration", which is the "breeding ground for Islamist fundamentalism".
