A former obstetrician has been sentenced to twelve years in prison for serious sexual offenses.
According to a French court, he raped eleven of his patients.
A criminal court in the southern French department of Hérault decided on the case.
From the point of view of the chamber, Charvin committed his acts between 2013 and 2016. During the preparation for the birth and after the birth, he is said to have tricked his patients into believing medical interventions in order to abuse them.
"He made them victims caught in their guilt"
The 49-year-old abused women under the "guise of familiarity," said public prosecutor Albert Cantinol.
"He made them victims of guilt." The prosecution had called for 20 years in prison.
The perpetrator did not shrink from "taking advantage of vulnerable women" who turned to him during pregnancy or after giving birth.
"Perverse Personality"
The defendant apologized to the victims before the verdict.
His lawyer said his only goal was the well-being of his patients.
According to France Bleu, the "pros and cons" will be weighed up and an appeal against the decision may be lodged.
A psychiatric expert concluded that the man was an "occasional offender" with a "perverse personality."
The accused's childhood was characterized by domestic violence, alcoholism and multiple incest.
Many of the victims stated that they felt "paralyzed" during the crime and that they did not initially dare to go public.
Everyone spoke of a massive breach of trust that occurred at a time when they were particularly vulnerable.
