The Freising Camerloher-Gymnasium is breaking completely new ground: A tablet class is being planned for the new school year.
The basis is the existing all-day class.

- The Camerloher-Gymnasium in Freising is planning a tablet class for the coming school year: German teacher Martina Wildgruber has taken the corona pandemic as an opportunity to further develop this all-day class, which has been available exclusively at Camerloher since 2017. Supported by the headmistress Andrea Bliese, the concept was developed in a working group with the teachers who will accompany the first tablet class. The all-day class at the Camerloher is particularly suitable for this because it is a so-called “bound all-day class”. The model “intensive lessons in the mornings, (extensive) homework and free time in the afternoons” is broken here. Rather, intensive work alternates with less intensive practice, repetition and relaxation throughout the school day - one speaks of rhythmisation,explains the Camerloher-Gymnasium. The teachers also look after their students themselves during lunchtime and study times. The all-day class is therefore in a class of its own and offers more freedom for learning in school, which is offered for the fifth and sixth grades. The designation as a “bound” all-day class comes from the fact that when you register you are “bound” to the model for two years.
New: Learn vocabulary with explanatory videos
At the Camerloher, there is now a digital facet: Working with tablets in all-day class, however, is deliberately not aimed at replacing analogue work equipment such as pen and paper with digital ones, but rather pushes for an expansion of the variety of methods, according to the school.
Children could learn vocabulary not only through repeated reading, but also through explanatory videos or audio files.
By encouraging consumerism, digital media can certainly limit the creativity and activity of young people; by introducing them to the use of tablets under the guidance of the teachers, the Camerloher tries to achieve the exact opposite: the increased activation of all students, for example by differentiating the task difficulty, through more individual feedback or simply through more variety.
You can work with cameras, editing programs or audio files and, in addition to handwriting, create videos, graphics and presentations or work together on a text file.
Very clever: This is how you use the instinct to play
At the Camerloher, it is hoped that the motivation to learn is aided by tablets.
Martina Wildgruber explains this with the so-called gamification effect - the instinct to play is used, for example through a quiz - and through the fascination with the use of technology itself.
Children can be registered for the tablet class in the bound full day on the Camerloher until Wednesday, May 12th.
