From Weah to Coman, PSG-Bayern have often made sparks

2021-04-06T13:41:20.898Z

With 9 confrontations including the Champions League final last year, the meetings between Bayern Munich and Paris SG have often lived up to the bill.

Historically, equality is almost perfect.

Since 1994, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich have crossed swords nine times, including eight times in the Champions League group stage.

The result: 5 Parisian victories, 4 Bavarians and 12 goals each scored.

The last duel to date left a bitter taste in Neymar and company: a defeat in the C1 final, the first in the history of PSG, in Lisbon on August 23, 2020 (0-1).

This Wednesday will be the second time that the two clubs face each other in the knockout stage.

And the first time in a round trip format.

September 14, 1994: Paris begins its epic (2-0)

A year ago, it was the best course for Paris Saint-Germain in the most prestigious of competitions.

The capital club failed in the semifinals of the 1994-95 edition, tamed by AC Milan under Franco Baresi and Zvonimir Boban.

The epic began against Bayern Munich of Oliver Kahn and Lothar Matthaüs.

At the Parc des Princes, PSG won its first duel against the German juggernaut, guided by a fox goal from the surfaces of George Weah then a volley from the left of Daniel Bravo.

The basics of a Seine season, with a Coupe de France and a Coupe de la Ligue at stake.

November 23, 1994: Mister George's number (0-1)

Almost qualified two days from the end, PSG calmly approaches its trip to the Olympic Stadium in Munich.

Bayern are recording Jean-Pierre Papin's return from injury, but no Bavarian striker will shine.

Not even the two holders on the Paris side, David Ginola and Pascal Nouma.

The first gives way to George Weah at the hour mark. In the 80th minute, the magic happens.

Daniel Bravo in our columns a few years ago: "He recovers a ball very far from the opposing goal, and then he makes a series of dribbles, a slalom in the German defense, before unleashing an overpowering strike."

Goals like that, "Mister George" scored "every day in training" according to Bravo.

6 matches, 6 wins in the group stage for PSG.

October 22, 1997: the deutsche revenge (5-1)

As in 1994-95, PSG inherits from Bayern in the group stage of the Champions League.

As in 1994-95, he won the Coupe de France and the Coupe de la Ligue.

But its entry on the European scene is intended to be more turbulent.

After a victory against Göteborg (3-0) and a defeat at Besiktas (3-1), Paris is being painted in Munich.

Élber and Jancker launch Bayern in the first half.

They each offer themselves a double after half-time.

The reduction of the gap signed Marco Simone does not save the honor of Rai's teammates.

November 5, 1997: the Park, impregnable fortress (3-1)

Since the semi-finals of C1 against AC Milan, PSG have chained 9 matches without defeat at home in Europe.

10 after Bayern's new reception.

Franck Gava, served by Rai at the penalty spot, opens his right foot to start hostilities (18th).

Markus Babbel takes advantage of an error by Édouard Cissé to equalize (29th).

In a more balanced match than the first leg, Florian Maurice pushes Michael Tarnat to a goal against his side (72nd).

Jérôme Leroy carries the fatal blow in stride (76th).

PSG will finish second in the group tied on points with Bayern, but only the first ones qualify directly for the quarter-finals.

The two best second are drafted and in this game, Paris is ... third, ahead of Juventus on goal difference.

September 26, 2000: one Leroy can hide another (1-0)

Laurent Leroy at the heart of Bayern Munich's defense in 2000.

In the space of 7 seasons, Parisians and Bavarians will have fallen 3 times in the same Champions League group.

PSG are then at 13 matches without defeat at the Parc des Princes in European competition.

Bayern Hasan Salihamidzic, now the club's sporting director, thinks they are on the right track against Nicolas Anelka's partners.

Until additional time.

Laurent Leroy, who is unrelated to Jérôme scorer three years earlier, hooks Thomas Linke at the entrance to the surface.

With the tip of his right foot while falling, Leroy deceives Oliver Kahn and makes the Park rejoice (90th + 2).

PSG's home unbeaten streak will rise to 14 matches before Deportivo La Coruna visit France in the next round (1-3).

October 18, 2000: Bayern responds again (2-0)

Like three years ago, the Red and Whites won at home, without a river score this time.

Salihamidzic surprises Paris from the start (2nd).

Paul Sérgio closes the store (89th).

Philippe Bergeroo's men fall on a run-of-the-mill opponent, who will win this edition of the Champions League.

PSG snatch their ticket to the second group stage, but they will finish last in a group comprising Deportivo La Coruna, Galatasaray and AC Milan.

September 27, 2017: hello Neymar, goodbye Ancelotti (3-0)

Traumatized by the comeback to Barcelona six months earlier, PSG tense the muscles at the start of a new edition of the Champions League.

His star recruits, Kylian Mbappé and Neymar, send a message to Europe on the lawn of Celtic (0-5).

Bayern's reception two weeks later is a recital.

Neymar slalom in the Munich defense to serve Dani Alves on a plateau (2nd).

Edinson Cavani worsens the mark on a mismatch from Mbappé (31st).

Paris spoils but finishes the job on time. Mbappé colds David Alaba and it is Neymar who benefits (63rd).

Carlo Ancelotti, former PSG coach, was sacked by the Bavarian management the next day.

December 5, 2017: Bayern and the clocks on time (3-1)

As we said in the preamble, this poster is historically balanced.

It is a Bayern Munich perked up by the return of Jupp Heynckes on the bench that PSG discovers at the Allianz Arena.

Both teams have already qualified for the round of 16, but it's a matter of honor.

And first place in the group, for a supposedly more affordable draw in the next round.

It is a surprising double from Corentin Tolisso (37th, 69th) which will precipitate the Parisian defeat, coupled with the opening scoring of Robert Lewandowski (8th).

The reduction of the gap signed Mbappé (50th) ensures Paris first place in the group.

What effectively offers him an easy draw with ... Real Madrid, double title holder.

Zidane's men will have without trembling a feverish PSG in the eighth for a third consecutive coronation.

August 23, 2020: Coman crucifies Paris (0-1)

In an unprecedented context, in the absence of a Covid-19 pandemic, Paris Saint-Germain climbed to the Champions League final for the first time in its history.

And here is Bayern Munich again, which has won its 20 previous matches in all competitions.

PSG is much more resistant than Barça in quarter (2-8) or Lyon in half (0-3).

But it only takes an oversight at the far post, on a center from Joshua Kimmich, for Kingsley Coman to carry the blow to his training club (59th).

The French world champion brings Bayern back to the roof of Europe for the first time since 2012. Paris leaves Lisbon and its Final 8 with its head down, but with plenty of experience.

To do better in 2021, it will be necessary to pass on the body of Bayern.
