The fuel prices in Germany have risen again.

And there are reasons for that.

Munich - 2021 was not an easy year for German drivers.

Because of the lack of chips, new cars were only available with long waiting times.

But used cars were also rare and therefore extremely expensive.

And prices also shot up at the gas station.

As an ADAC analysis shows, 2021 was actually the most expensive refueling year since 2013. Diesel already reached a new record high in October, and November was even the most expensive refueling month of all time.

In December, the long-awaited turnaround set in and fuel prices in Germany fell again.

Fuel prices in Germany: New year starts with price shock

The joy did not last long, however, because the prices for gasoline and diesel have risen significantly again in the new year, as reported by 24auto.de.

As the ADAC announced, the price for a liter of Super E10 rose by 3.5 cents in the first week of January and cost a nationwide average of 1.648 euros (psycho-trick at the gas station: that's why we almost never pay full price)

A liter of diesel has also risen by 3.5 cents.

In the national average, the price was 1.562 euros.

However, this does not come as a complete surprise.

At the turn of the year, the CO2 tax on fuels increased.

"This increases the price of a liter of petrol or diesel arithmetically by around 1.5 cents," explains the ADAC.

Fuel prices in Germany: crude oil is increasing in price

However, fuel prices in Germany have risen significantly more than calculated by the ADAC.

There is also a simple explanation for this: Crude oil has recently become more expensive again, with a barrel of Brent crude costing around 80 US dollars.

In order to be able to refuel as cheaply as possible, the ADAC recommends taking advantage of the fluctuations in fuel prices during the day and refueling in the evening hours.

Gasoline is usually cheapest between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. and 10 p.m.
