G7 summit and Bavarian customs: Gaudi

Host Germany will give the G7 summit a Bavarian setting. This creates clichéd images - and overwhelms state guests.

Joe Biden has ended up in the cliché.

When the US President climbed out of his Air Force One at Munich's Franz Josef Strauss Airport on Saturday evening, the welcoming committee for the G7 summit was already waiting downstairs.

Men in traditional costumes salute, white feathers in their hats.

A good dozen women in traditional Bavarian costumes have put bouquets of flowers in their décolletés.

Arrived on the red carpet, two children - of course in traditional costume - presented the 79-year-old with a bouquet of flowers.

The Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder distinguishes himself from the dress code, he wears a traditional jacket over a tacky shirt.

If Biden hadn't been to Berlin in his previous job as Vice President, he would have to think: This is Germany.

Of course, a brass band plays in the background against the noise of the airport.

The summit of the seven important democratic industrial states at Schloss Elmau is embedded in a highly Bavarian setting.

This creates clichéd images of Germany abroad - and ridicule at home.

CNN moderator Jake Tapper shared a scene with his 3.3 million Twitter followers that can be seen every day from Flensburg to Garmisch-Partenkirchen: two young Schuhplattlers in action.

Tapper's comment: »Good evening from Germany!«

The British journalist Ian Bremmer felt a little confused when he saw the pictures from the airport.

"For me, Germans never dress like this when I come to visit," he tweeted.

The "taz" was also able to gain something positive from the Bavarian reception and headlined: "Finally indigenous peoples at the G7 summit".

While Joe Biden accepted the greeting with statesmanlike indifference, other state guests had their difficulties finding the right way to deal with the Bavarian attitude to life.

For example Narendra Damodardas Modi, Prime Minister of India.

French President Emmanuel Macron walked the red carpet with his wife Brigitte.

But their looks are more like: "They've never been to Paris, we don't know them."

But there is a modern dab in all the tradition at the summit.

As the pictures show, the G7 participants are apparently meeting in the yoga pavilion at Schloss Elmau.

The Elmauer Almhütte would also have been an option.

The G7 summit started on Sunday morning and will last until Tuesday.

In addition to Germany, the group includes the USA, Canada, Great Britain, France, Italy and Japan.

On Monday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will address the heads of state and government of the major industrialized countries.

The G7 countries have expanded sanctions against Russia after the attack on Ukraine a good four months ago.

US President Joe Biden announced on Sunday that the G7 countries would impose a ban on imports of gold from Russia.
