Seven years after the brilliant and much-noticed G7 summit in Schloss Elmau, history is repeating itself in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district. From June 26th to 28th, 2022, the heads of state and government of the leading western industrial nations will meet again to exchange ideas in the Elmauer Valley. No one of the regional local politicians wants to officially confirm it. When asked about it, the summit-tempered Krün mayor Thomas Schwarzenberger (CSU) takes refuge in common places. "I've heard about it, let's see what the time brings." Otherwise Schwarzenberger strains the subjunctive. “If the summit actually came, then two hearts would beat in my chest.” On the one hand, there is the anticipation of a world-class event.On the other hand, the mayor sees the amount of work in advance and the general situation in Germany, which has noticeably changed since the outbreak of the corona pandemic at the latest.
District Administrator Anton Speer (Free Voters) also heard about the G7. “That was half a year ago, then suddenly it was said that we were eligible again,” recalls the Unterammergau resident. He immediately asked the government. There the information was confirmed to him. "But we were told immediately that it was rather unlikely, since the same federal state does not normally get involved twice." A place on the Baltic Sea was also mentioned at the time. Speer nevertheless immediately informed the district council - not public, of course.
The fact that the summit is actually taking place again in the district "I currently have no confirmation for that".
One thing is certain for him: "It would be a huge challenge for us, especially now under the pandemic conditions." Summit is taking place, now that would be just over seven months. ”But there are increasing signs that the phase up to June 2022 will not be a piece of cake for Speer and Co.
