The axes of the training course “Geographical Statistics” launched today by the Arab Center for Studies of Dry Areas and Arid Lands “ACSAD” focus on introducing this field, which is concerned with the analysis of integrated data on natural and human phenomena based on numerical measures and access to measures of dispersal, spread, distributions and types, spatial and non-spatial statistics.
The four-day course will be attended by 20 male and female trainees from the ministries of agriculture, agrarian reform, local administration, environment and water resources. It aims to introduce geographical statistics as one of the modern branches of statistics through lectures given by experts and researchers from ACSAD.
In a speech during the opening of the course at the organization’s headquarters in Damascus countryside, ACSAD Director General, Dr. Nasr Al-Din Al-Obeid, pointed out the importance of the course in developing the knowledge and skills of the trainees regarding the geographical statistics methodology, which is a new methodology and modern technology that is a tributary to remote sensing technologies and geographic information systems and has proven its scientific and economic feasibility. .
Al-Obaid pointed out that this methodology is applied in a number of disciplines, including meteorology, environmental monitoring, smart agriculture and livestock pathology, determining the appropriateness of agricultural practices and patterns for the sites in which they are implemented, and choosing the best and appropriate in time and space.
Al-Obaid explained that ACSAD has developed its experience and knowledge in the field of geographical statistics as a methodology for spatial statistical analysis and seeks to transfer this experience and knowledge to national institutions in the Arab countries due to the importance of this methodology in applying statistical procedures in research areas and qualitative studies that promote access to positive results that ensure the safety of the environment and people.
