Gladbach's draw against Real Madrid: no trauma coping

2020-10-27T23:32:53.010Z

The duels between these teams so far have been full of highlights, but always ended bitterly for Borussia. That has continued. About a 2-2, with which both teams cannot live well.

If it weren't for the word "If":

If football games lasted 89 minutes, Gladbach would be the sovereign leader in Group B of the Champions League.

After Inters Lukaku equalized in the 90th minute in Milan, it was even the third minute of stoppage time when the team gave up the win against Madrid.

Viewed through rose-colored glasses, Marco Rose's team did not lose in the two games against the two favorites for the round of 16 (and left both behind in the table for the time being).

Viewed soberly, Marco Rose's team has given away four points, giving away the championship lead and an excellent starting position.

The result:

Borussia Mönchengladbach plays 2: 2 (1: 0) against Real Madrid and is now second in Group B after two draws in the Champions League. Real is bottom of the table.

The first half:

Both teams pressed early, the defensive rows were mostly able to defend themselves confidently.

Real had more possession of the ball, but like their opponents did not create any clear chances to score.

With the first good chance of the game, Marcus Thuram met after a bad pass by Toni Kroos (33rd minute).

Not much more happened before the break.

No trauma coping:

Gladbach and Real met twice in the European Cup.

Both times it looked good for the foals in between, in the end Gladbach was eliminated.

Borussia also led 2-0 in the first leg in the 1976 European Cup, but ended up playing 2-2.

In the second leg they were eliminated by a 1: 1 and two controversially revoked own goals.

In 1985, the team under Jupp Heynckes won the first leg at home 5-1 in the Uefa Cup, then lost 4-0 in Madrid and eliminated.

In 2020, two-goal lead was only enough for one point until shortly before the end.

But not 300:

after a break of almost four years, the Champions League anthem rang out again in Borussia-Park - and without any spectators.

Two weeks ago, more than 10,000 spectators were supposed to be allowed into the stadium, then it was reduced to 300.

Because of a corona incidence value of 94.2 in Mönchengladbach, the decision was made yesterday: No viewers are allowed in.

At least in front of the TV, the fans (initially) had fun.

Second half:

After 46 seconds Marco Asensio hit the post after a shot deflected from Florian Neuhaus.

As a result, the Spanish dominated the game, but Gladbach scored the goal again.

Thibaut Courtois could not hold a shot from Pléa, Thuram was spot on (58th).

Alassane Pléa and Lars Stindl gave away good chances to make it 3-0 shortly afterwards.

Until the 87th minute, it didn't seem to take revenge.

Then Karim Benzema and Casemiro (90 + 3.) Met.

The flanks that preceded the two goals conceded were in the air too long to be indefensible.

And with a little more cleverness, promising counter-situations could have been played to 3: 1 or even 3: 2 at the very end

Again and again Sergio Ramos:

In the defeat in the league against Cádiz, the captain had to leave the pitch at break, he missed the 2: 3 against Donetsk at the beginning of the premier class injured.

In Clásico Sergio Ramos was there again and the decisive player.

The captain "cleverly" (some would say unjustified) took the questionable penalty to make it 2-1 - and then converted himself. In Gladbach, not only Ramos but the entire Clásico eleven were allowed to play, although they did not do well for a long time.

The 2: 2 prepared Ramos perfectly with his head.

Good for Madrid that they have Ramos.

Bad for Madrid, how much they seem to need him.

Maybe the Los Blancos' crisis is not over after only one win against a mediocre opponent, even if it took place against Barcelona.

Hardly any ideas, but the negative trend stopped:

Real had lost in nine of the previous ten games in the premier class when they were behind at break.

The Spaniards were able to stop this trend today.

But it should shock all who stick with Madrid that the team has not been able to play against Gladbach's low chances for a long time.

With all due respect for Gladbach's defensive performance: That can't be Real's claim.
