Road traffic in London: The British government wants to strengthen the rights of vulnerable road users

Pedestrians and cyclists should have more privileges in road traffic in Great Britain.
According to a report by the BBC, the road traffic regulations are to be adapted in favor of these forms of transport.
This requires the approval of Parliament in the autumn.
"Millions of us discovered in the past year what great ways cycling and running are great ways to stay fit, relieve the roads and do something for the environment," said UK Transport Secretary Grant Shapps.
According to the report, the changes include that straight-ahead cyclists should have right of way at an intersection.
In addition, drivers should give priority to pedestrians at crossings, even if they have not yet entered the street.
The new rules are also intended to create a new hierarchy in road traffic: Those who can cause greater damage to others with their vehicle should also bear greater responsibility.
According to a report by Forbes magazine, pedestrians have top priority, followed by cyclists.
Drivers are in 5th place - even behind riders and motorcyclists.

During his time as Mayor of London, the expansion of the cycle path network was one of his most important projects.
Living Streets welcomed the government's announcement.
"Currently, the Highway Code treats children on their way to school and truck drivers as though they are equally responsible for their own safety and the safety of others," said Stephen Edwards of Living Streets, according to the BBC.
The changes would make up for this.
