PRESS REVIEW - The first blockbuster to hit theaters in months, Ric Roman Waugh's film convinces above all because viewers don't have much choice.

First big Hollywood production to find its way to French theaters, Greenland - The last refuge is the new baby of Ric Roman Waugh. Last summer, the American director gave us the explosive The Fall of the President , worn by Morgan Freeman and Gerard Butler. The second is once again at the center of the plot of this new film. He plays John Garrity, an architect chosen by the State among the future survivors, who will try to save his ex-wife and his son from the fall of a comet on the verge of touching Earth.

“The first (the only?) US blockbuster of the summer! The marketing argument is simple and thin, about as much as the scenario of Greenland - The Last Refuge , asserts immediately La Voix du Nord . The daily life is not more tender with the characters and their background: “In the role of the hero (good job, nice house, big car), the fearless Gerard Butler. We usually see him saving the president; here, he has a much more difficult task to accomplish (besides saving his loved ones): to regain the confidence of his wife (the transparent Morena Baccarin), whom he stupidly deceived ” .

We are pulling the line to arrive at 2 hours full of air holes, we do not know very well how to end this story to have a happy ending

Thierry Cheze, Premiere

If Première considers the beginning of the film as an "undeniable success", it then deteriorates. "We get lost in their history of couple and badly digested deception, we pull the line to arrive at 2 hours full of air holes, we do not know very well how to end this story to have a happy ending but not too much happy anyway… ” , underlines Thierry Cheze, who praises all the same the effectiveness of the film, specifying that the lack of choice due to the health crisis helps a little.

Great entertaining spectacle, supported by effective special effects.

The Parisian

For our colleagues at Le Parisien , the production of Ric Roman Waugh however manages to convince. “Greenland plays its role as an escape film perfectly, even if it takes place in an end-of-the-world atmosphere. Accustomed to action films, Gerard Butler here inherits a role not only based on his musculature. (...) A big, entertaining spectacle, supported by effective special effects, ” insists the Paris daily.

“The film does not lack revivals, while its hero must deal with his estranged wife and his diabetic son. The scenario finds ingenious sub-plots , considers Jacky Bornet of France Info. "The staging of Ric Roman Waugh is up to the ambitions of a good maker who fulfills the contract" , he believes, insisting on the "formatted" and summery aspect of the film, which, once again , takes advantage of less competition. Finally, the JDD speaks of “enjoyable spectacle of mass destruction” which highlights “the psychology of the characters” .
