In foreign countries, there have been cases of mink-to-human transmission in Denmark and the Netherlands, and Denmark has culled as many as 17 million minks, causing legal disputes.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the risk of animals transmitting the new coronavirus to humans remains low.

Two mink farms in the southern Dutch province of Noord-Brabant experienced an outbreak of COVID-19 in April 2020.

The government said in May of the same year that a mink farm worker contracted the new coronavirus from a mink, the first local case of animal-to-human transmission.

Denmark culls mink

In Denmark, mutated strains of the new coronavirus were also found to be circulating in mink farms in 2020, and more than 200 new coronavirus cases are suspected to be related to minks.

In November of the same year, the government decided to cull 15 million to 17 million minks across the country to prevent the mutant virus from spreading to humans through animals.

At the time, Denmark still did not have a vaccine for the new crown, and the government expressed concern that if the virus mutated repeatedly, it might affect the efficacy of future vaccines.

The decision was followed by legal controversy. Denmark later admitted that the government had no legal authority to cull healthy mink, and should only cull mink that had been infected with the new crown virus. Agriculture Minister Mogens Jensen eventually resigned as a result. Prime Minister Fraseri Mette Frederiksen is about to be investigated by Congress, and the turmoil is burning to this day.

Fraser Rickson stressed on November 3, 2021, that she did not know beforehand that the government did not have the power to issue a comprehensive culling order.

CDC: Low risk

The U.S. CDC said on its website on the 18th that the Netherlands, Denmark and Poland have all reported cases of mink-to-human transmission of the new coronavirus. The risk is low, and there is currently no evidence that animals play an important role in transmitting the new coronavirus to humans.

The CDC also said that more research is needed to understand whether and how different animals are affected by the new coronavirus.
