Hannover: Weapon collector sentenced to three years imprisonment

A gun collector has been sentenced in Hannover to a prison sentence of three years. The district court found the 30-year-old guilty of deliberate violation of the Weapons Law and the War Weapons Control Act. His father was also convicted.

The 53-year-old received a seven-month sentence suspended on probation. He had known that his son was collecting weapons, but did not further verify that they were sharp weapons, the presiding judge said in his verdict.

The prosecution had demanded a prison sentence of four years and two months for the son, the defense a two-year probation. For the father, the prosecution pleaded for three years imprisonment. The defense, on the other hand, demanded an acquittal.

Weapons, ammunition and Nazi devotional items

The police had discovered in the room of the 30-year-old more than 50 operational weapons, including rifles, submachine guns, a launcher for a bazooka, about 3650 rounds of ammunition, about 100,000 euros in cash and orders and banners from the Nazi era.

The son, who was traveling in right-wing extremist Internet forums, admitted in the process of having bought and hoarded the partly prohibited weapons. He denied that he wanted to hurt people.
