In a call with journalists, an official assured that the Administration will allocate 1,000 million dollars in technology and in the ports of entry. The Governments of Mexico, Japan and South Korea, along with the United Nations, have pledged to join the initiative.

Vice President Kamala Harris presented on Thursday a strategy to address the causes that lead to the arrival of thousands of citizens from Central America to the United States, with the aim of creating "a just, orderly and humane immigration system."

Harris warned, however, that his government's efforts will not produce immediate results and that it cannot alone take all the measures to reverse the situation in the Central American countries.

"First, addressing the root causes of migration is critical to our overall immigration effort," Harris explained in a statement on the US government's plan.

"Second, providing aid is not enough to curb migration from the region. Third, if we don't address all the root causes, problems will persist. [And] fourth, and most importantly, the United States cannot do this job alone, "said the vice president.

The ultimate objective of this strategy is to fulfill the promise made by the president, Joe Biden, when he arrived at the White House: to reform the immigration system by creating a path to citizenship for the almost 11 million undocumented immigrants, to modernize the process of immigration and manage the southern border more effectively.

The Government has identified that the economic effects of the coronavirus pandemic and the climate crisis have exacerbated the reasons why Guatemalans, Hondurans, and Salvadorans leave their country, up to now mainly driven by corruption, violence, poverty, and human trafficking. people.

The United States has sent COVID-19 vaccines and emergency kits and kits for weather disasters, but "we know that it is not enough to alleviate suffering in the long term," the vice president said in the statement.

On the other hand, Harris reiterated that the Government is committed to the fight against corruption in Guatemala, for which he recalled that "it will set up an Anti-Corruption Working Group that will include US prosecutors and police experts who will investigate cases."

Part of the effort to mitigate the socio-economic situation that Central America has been going through for decades involves working in coordination with other countries, private companies and NGOs, said the vice president.

In this sense, he announced that Mexico, Japan, South Korea and the United Nations have already joined his initiative.

"Although the private sector has been an underutilized partner in the past, our Administration is asking US and international companies to invest in the region, and so far 12 have done," Harris said.

"Private sector investment not only boosts economic opportunities, but also incentivizes regional governments to create the conditions on the ground to attract such investment," he stressed.

The White House also released a "Collaborative Migration Management Strategy," which the president ordered in February to outline how the United States will work with other countries to address migration flows.

Like the Strategy on Causes, the one-page document is a comprehensive statement of principles, many of which have already been championed by Biden and his key contributors.

They include

extending protections and job opportunities in the countries from which people leave

the

creation of more legal ways to come to America and promoting a "safe and humane border management".

Border authorities reported that large numbers of migrants arrived at the Mexican border in June and that the number of families and children traveling alone increased significantly.

The trend appears to continue in July, despite high temperatures.

The Department of Homeland Security said Monday it resumed express deportations for "certain" families who do not express fear of being returned to their country.

Although he never announced the suspension, many families entering the country illegally have been released into the United States with orders to appear in immigration court or to appear before immigration authorities.
