She had been missing since Tuesday, after having successfully climbed the 8,163 m of Manaslu, the eighth highest mountain the day before.

The search ends tragically.

The body of the famous American mountaineer Hilaree Nelson was found on Mount Manaslu, in Nepal, the day after her disappearance, the organizers of the expedition in which she was taking part announced on Wednesday morning.

"The search team that left this (Wednesday) morning by helicopter spotted his body and are bringing him back," said Jiban Ghimire of Shangri-La Nepal Trek, which organized the expedition.

He said the body has been brought back to base camp and will be flown to Kathmandu.

Hilaree Nelson began the ski descent of this Himalayan mountain on Tuesday after having successfully climbed the 8,163 m of Manaslu the day before, with her companion Jim Morrison, which makes this mountain the eighth highest in the world.

Expedition organizer Jiban Ghimire led the search operations and set out on Wednesday morning in a helicopter to find her.

The helicopters could not fly on Monday and the rescue services returned empty-handed on Tuesday.

The "most prolific mountaineer of his generation"

The 49-year-old mountaineer's career spans two decades and she is described as "the most prolific female ski mountaineer of her generation" by North Face, her sponsor.

In 2012, she was the first woman to reach the summit of Everest, the highest mountain in the world, and the neighboring mountain of Lhotse in 24 hours.

In an Instagram post last week, the mountaineer said the climb had been particularly strenuous due to "relentless rain" and dangerous conditions.

This is the second confirmed casualty of the autumn climbing season in Nepal.

The same day of his disappearance, an avalanche occurred between camps 3 and 4 of Manaslu, killing a Nepalese mountaineer and injuring a dozen people, according to the government's tourism department.
