Munich (dpa) - Honorary President Uli Hoeneß of FC Bayern hopes for a boost for basketball through the championship tournament of the Bundesliga in Munich.

"It's a great opportunity for basketball to make many new friends and keep the fans entertained in this sportless period," said the 68-year-old on the club's YouTube channel before the first game on Saturday. "I think this is a 100 percent correct decision by those responsible."

Unlike the top German leagues in handball and ice hockey, basketball players are continuing their season, which was interrupted by the coronavirus pandemic. All ten participating teams move into a hotel in Munich and are isolated from the outside world. The master is to be chosen on June 28th.

The BBL had developed a strict hygiene and safety concept for the tournament, which was approved by the Bavarian government. "Since it was also a political decision, I was a bit involved," said Hoeneß. "I helped where it went. I think we can all be happy that things are going right now." The deputy chairman of the Bavarian supervisory board also wants to follow the tournament in the Audi Dome up close. "I will certainly watch a game or two," said Hoeneß.
