The president of Honduras, Juan Orlando Hernández, signed on Wednesday a letter of intent for the acquisition of 1,400,000 doses of the vaccine against covid-19 from AstraZeneca, which will benefit the same number of affiliates of the Honduran Institute of Social Security (IHSS).
According to an official statement, he stated that 100% of the “medically fit” population will be vaccinated.
The agreement stipulates having the necessary initial inventory of vaccines as soon as possible to immunize health professionals and others also exposed such as police officers, firefighters and people with risk factors.
"This will allow a group of Hondurans who would otherwise be isolated to be vaccinated," said the president.
And he added: "This will give us the famous immunization to be incorporated into full activity in the economy."

The president said that in July he sent a letter to the World Alliance for Vaccination (Gavi) to guarantee in a first step that 20% of the population receives the vaccine.
He stressed that the purchase of the doses will be done in an "efficient and transparent" manner.
As of Wednesday, the Ministry of Health of Honduras confirmed 106,116 cases of coronavirus and 2,888 deaths.
