From our correspondent in London

In recent weeks, when there were concerns about the Queen's health, the British took comfort in thinking of the jubilee.

They told themselves that with this prospect, Elizabeth II would hold out.

That all his strength was stretched towards the celebrations of his 70 years of reign.

A national pastry competition from the age of 8

The anniversary will also have lasting traces. Some 60,000 trees will be planted across the country to form the

"Jubilee Green Canopy"

and every Briton is invited to plant one, which will appear on a digital map presented to the Queen. Above all, a national pastry competition, open to everyone from the age of eight, is launched this Monday to create

"a new pudding dedicated to the queen"

. The five finalists will be decided by a jury including the chef of the Palais. The winning recipe will then be shared with the public to be reproduced during the

“big Jubilee lunches”

but also later

“by the generations to come”

. It is hoped that this dessert will become a classic as the

"Victoria Sponge"

, this cake served at the Court during the traditional afternoon tea at the initiative of the Duchess of Bedford, one of Queen Victoria's favorites. Or the

“Coronation chicken”

, this chicken recipe that appeared for the 1953 coronation.

Elizabeth II became Queen at the age of 25 on February 6, 1952, after the death of her father George VI.

The 95-year-old sovereign will be the first British monarch to reach 70 years of reign.

In September 2015, she already passed the time her great-great-grandmother, Queen Victoria, spent on the throne.

She then declared that she had

"never aspired"

to this historic moment.

These celebrations are a reminder of how much the Queen is a central figure in British life.

A recent study showed that for 85% of them, she is the only monarch they have known.
