There are only four professionals left in the Hamburger Sportverein squad who experienced relegation from the Bundesliga in the 2017/2018 season. The only one of them who played a sporting role back then is called Bakary Jatta. Now the fast right winger took the opportunity to crown himself the hero of the 107th city derby against FC St. Pauli: A volley shot with the first contact, which St. Pauli keeper Nikola Vasilj could hardly keep, scored in the guest goal after 70 minutes one. Jatta not only cemented his status as a crowd favourite, but also created the conditions to soon add an ascent to the descent in his vita.
The result:
A 2:1 (0:1) comeback temporarily catapulted Hamburger SV to third place in the table, while St. Pauli remained at the top.

The skull and crossbones is waving:
The initial situation before the game started was clear: HSV had to prove themselves.
Not only were four of the last five city derbies lost (the rest of the game also just a draw), with a defeat FC St. Pauli would also jump to nine points in the table.
The supposedly larger Hamburg club found itself in the challenger role, but the most recent St. Pauli record of three league games without a win gave hope.
The first half:
And the
first
quarter of an hour should also have contributed to the self-confidence of the retired Bundesliga dinosaur: Faride Alidou (3rd), Moritz Heyer with a header on the post (6th) and Miro Muheim with a deflected long-range shot (10th) provided early for goal danger.
St. Pauli only gradually fought their way into the game – and promptly took the lead after a free kick through Guido Burgstaller (30').
Burgstaller shoots:
The Cinderella story of the week was actually that of Etienne Amenyido: St. Pauli's nominal striker number four to five had played in the starting eleven, scored a point against Aue and in the cup coup against his youth club Borussia Dortmund and was also directly involved in the 1-0. But Burgstaller deserves extra praise: the Austrian has a reputation for being a hard-working but harmless striker from his time at Schalke. Burgstaller scored his 15th goal of the season in 20 games against HSV – the best in the league and Burgstaller's best season in the lower house so far. In his best career season, 2016/2017, Burgstaller scored 23 goals, nine of them for S04 in league one (the rest for 1. FC Nürnberg).
The second half:
The hosts in the west of Hamburg kept up the pressure, Ludovit Reis (50') and Robert Glatzel (57') were already close to equalizing before Sebastian Schonlau headed in a corner.
Jatta's goal for the comeback was deserved (70'), HSV goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes held on to victory in the closing stages against Burgstaller (81') and substitute Maximilian Dittgen (90'+5').
Vulkan Walter:
The only 2,000 fans admitted made every effort, but they were only partially able to turn the Volksparkstadion into a witch's cauldron. Tim Walter didn't need any emotions from outside anyway, the HSV coach didn't always have himself under control because of the derby atmosphere. In the first half, a clear "Shut up!" could be heard over the stadium microphones to an addressee who could only be assumed, in the second half there was a yellow card for too much excitement about a referee's decision.
Demigod in white with red trousers:
At the beginning of the game it was still St. Pauli's X-factor Daniel-Kofi Kyereh who led the Bundesliga 2 assist statistics with nine assists. Only Kyereh's performance explosion had brought the chief creative from the Kiez a place in the Ghanaian national team and a trip to the Africa Cup, despite the preliminary round, the derby came too early for a comeback. The turf belonged to the Kyereh counterpart of HSV: Sonny Kittel, standard virtuoso and puppet master, delivered his assists nine and ten with a corner to equalize and with a through ball to decide.
The chance for revenge: the
first and second leg have been played, both Hamburg clubs have won once each.
However, there is still the possibility of a prestige tiebreaker: Because both HSV and FC St. Pauli are in the last eight in the DFB Cup, the fans can hope for another derby under floodlights.
The quarter-finals will be drawn on January 30th, ARD will broadcast live from 7:15 p.m.
Otherwise there is still hope for a new edition in the coming season – possibly even in league one.
