After the shark attacks near the Egyptian seaside resort of Hurghada, in which two women died, more has become known about the victims.

According to reports from various Austrian media, the first victim is Elisabeth S., who was a member of the Kramsach city council for the Greens from 1998 to 2004.

According to a Facebook post by the party, she was a “committed Green right from the start”.

The Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Vienna confirmed the death of a 68-year-old Austrian.

According to the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the second victim is a Romanian woman who was vacationing in Hurghada.

According to medical circles, Elisabeth S. was married to an Egyptian and lived in Hurghada on the Red Sea.

She was snorkeling in shallow water when a shark attacked her, reports the dpa news agency.

Tourists watched the scene from the beach and from a jetty.

A video shows the woman trying to get to safety.

Meanwhile, men from the jetty try to pull her out of the water with a rope.

The woman was able to save herself on the shore, but then died in the hospital.

A second woman apparently died after being attacked by the same shark.

This was announced by the Egyptian Ministry of the Environment in Cairo.

Environment Minister Jasmin Fuad expressed her condolences to the families of the two victims.

The incident happened in a bay south of Hurghada.

The beach was closed for three days.

The Chamber of Diving and Water Sports (CDWS) informed its members of the sighting of a mako shark in the area following the incident.

Mako sharks can reach speeds of up to 70 kilometers per hour.

When fully grown, they can be over four meters long and weigh over 500 kilograms.

Hammerheads, oceanic whitetips, silky sharks and other species also live in the Red Sea.

The Red Sea is a popular destination for divers, among others.

Shark attacks are actually very rare there.
