The Association of Automotive Dealers of the Argentine Republic (ACARA) reported that between January and August 2021,
3,760 hybrid and electric vehicles
were patented in the country
, representing a year-on-year growth of
133%
.
The ACARA report was published a day after the government renewed preferential import tariffs on cars of this kind of sustainable vehicle.
The monthly average of sales in 2021 exceeds 470 units, having reached a historical maximum in August, when
589 units
were sold
(22% more than the 483 registered in July).
If the monthly averages of the last three years are compared, in 2021 there were 2.6 times more patents than in 2019 and almost 1.4 times more than in 2020.
The Toyota Corolla is the nation's best-selling hybrid model.
Toyota in the lead
The Japanese brand is the company with the largest offer of hybrid vehicles, with six models that account for 86.6% of the market.
The
Corolla
is the
most patented hybrid model
so far in 2021, with 1,704 units.
It is followed by the
Corolla Cross
(911), and
RAV4
(540).
Toyota's offering is completed by the
C-HR
, the
Camry
sedan
, and the
Prius
, the world's best-selling hybrid.
For its part, Ford ranks
second
with a market share of 9.7%.
The brand offers two hybrid models:
Mondeo
and
Kuga
, which with 280 units ranks fourth in 2021 patents.
Lexus, Toyota's luxury luxury brand, ranks
third
with a 2% share and an offering comprised of six models: the IS, ES and SL sedans, and the UX, RX and NX SUVs.
Ford offers the Kuga and Mondeo (both hybrids) and ranks second with a 9.7% market share.
On the electric car side, Renault and Nissan, which offer the
Kangoo
and
Leaf
models
respectively, share the top spot with 10 patents each so far in 2021.
The offer is completed with the Audi e-tron (it will increase with the next arrival of the
RS e-tron GT
, its most powerful electric car), the Porsche Taycan and the models from Argentina's Sero Electric.
From ACARA they highlighted that the novelty of the report is that the first data of the electric motorcycle market in Argentina were incorporated, which "although it still looks very incipient, it is showing a very interesting dynamic, and this despite the fact that some regulatory issues need to be adjusted that make a good part of the sales go under the radar, by not being patented ".
The Nissan Leaf is the most patented 100% electric model alongside the Renault Kangoo.
This incipient market, for which there is still a lot of infrastructure development and consumer confidence, is strongly influenced, not only by improvements in technology but mainly by regulation that impacts the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).
In Argentina, for example, the final sale price depends on the regulation that establishes the import duty and the CTP varies significantly in those jurisdictions where they enjoy tax preferences.
In the City of Buenos Aires, electric and hybrid vehicles are exempt from paying the automotive tax (patent), as in Río Grande (Tierra del Fuego), Neuquén and San Juan.
In Mendoza province, on the other hand, they have a 50% reduction on the same tax and in San Luis 75%,
which explains, in part, the geographical distribution of sales.
