Three goalkeepers, eight defenders and 14 attackers belong to the squad of the German national team for the 2022 Ice Hockey World Championships in Finland.

On May 13, 2022, the German national team will start the 2022 Ice Hockey World Championships in Helsinki with the preliminary round match against Canada. Toni Söderholm, the coach of the national team, has called up 25 players to his squad, who should be as successful as possible in the tournament in Finland.

This includes three goalkeepers, namely:

  • Philipp Grubauer (Seattle Kraken)

  • Mathias Niederberger (EHC Red Bull Munich)

  • Dustin Strahlmeier (Grizzlies Wolfsburg)

Grubauer went to North America at the age of 16 and recommended himself for the American National Hockey League (NHL), the best ice hockey league in the world, thanks to his performances in the Ontario Hockey League.

In 2018 he won the Stanley Cup with the Washington Capitals, becoming only the fourth German to lift the prestigious trophy.

Grubauer moved to the Colorado Avalanche in 2018 and to the Seattle Kraken in 2021.

Niederberger also tried his luck in North America, but from 2011 to 2014 he only got involved in lower-class leagues.

In 2021 and 2022 he became German champion with the Eisbären Berlin, in 2022 he switched to the Ice Hockey Club (EHC) Red Bull Munich.

Ray Meier joined the German Ice Hockey League (DEL) in 2014 and the Grizzlys Wolfsburg in 2020.

In 2018 and 2022 he was voted the best goalkeeper in the league.

Ice Hockey World Championship 2022: the German defense

The defense sent by the German Ice Hockey Federation (DEB) to the Ice Hockey World Championship 2022 consists of these players:

  • Dominik Bittner (Grizzlies Wolfsburg)

  • Korbinian Holzer (Adler Mannheim)

  • Jonas Müller (Polar Bears Berlin)

  • Moritz Müller (Cologne Sharks)

  • Moritz Seider (Detroit Red Wings)

  • Fabio Wagner (ERC Ingolstadt)

  • Kai Wissmann (Polar Bears Berlin)

  • Mario Zimmermann (Straubing Tigers)

The only defender in the national team who is not under contract with a German club is Moritz Seider.

He is also one of the youngest players in the DEB squad.

Seider completed the 2018/2019 season for the Adler Mannheim in the DEL, became champion with them and was also named the best newcomer in the league.

He ran for pick in the 2019 NHL draft and was picked sixth overall by the Detroit Red Wings.

After a loan to Swedish club Rögle BK, Seider made his NHL debut for the Red Wings in October 2021.

The most successful German defenders are Kai Wissmann and Jonas Müller.

With the Eisbären Berlin they became champions in 2021 and 2022.

These are all the players who will be hunting for goals for the German national team at the 2022 Ice Hockey World Championships:

Three of them are not active in Germany.

Marc Michaelis also gained experience in the top hockey league in the world when he played for the Vancouver Canucks in the 2020-2021 season.

In the summer of 2021 he moved to the Toronto Marlies, who are represented in the second-rate American Hockey League.

Stefan Loibl left Club Adler Mannheim for the Swedish club Skellefteå AIK in the summer of 2021.
