The murder of a petrol station cashier in Idar-Oberstein causes horror: What is known about the perpetrator so far - and what is not.

Idar-Oberstein - On Saturday evening (September 18, 2021) a man enters a gas station in Idar-Oberstein (Rhineland-Palatinate). The cashier advises him to put on a mask. There are initial discussions, but the man leaves the gas station again. About an hour and a half later, however, he returns: with a mask, but with a need to talk. When he arrives at the cash register, he pulls his face mask under his chin. There is an exchange of words with the 20-year-old cashier who works as a temporary worker in the gas station. The man then pulls out a revolver and kills the cashier "deliberately in the head," as the public prosecutor later put it.

The perpetrator then escapes on foot.

Alarmed police forces search for him all night, but without result.

On Sunday morning (September 19, 2021) the 49-year-old appears in front of the police station, accompanied by a woman.

He lets himself be arrested by special forces without resistance.

But what drove the man to do this?

Who is the 49 year old?

Had the police noticed him before?

Numerous questions about the bloody act of Idar-Oberstein.

Some of them already have answers, many not yet -

an overview.

  • Person:

Numerous details are still unclear about the urgent suspect. So far it is only known that he is 49 years old, a German citizen and lives in the Birkenfeld district.

  • Motive of the act:

The investigative authorities initially wanted to give a few details about the man's motives. However, at a press conference they later reported that the man had gone to the gas station to buy beer. The man stated that he was initially annoyed at home and went back to the gas station with his pistol.

According to the authorities, part of his motivation was not only the general annoyance but also the restrictions caused by the Corona * pandemic. For him, the current situation is very stressful, he said during the interrogation. He saw "no other way out" of the situation. The victim appeared to him "responsible for the overall situation, since it had enforced the rules."

According to the investigating authorities, the man had previously been inconspicuous.

During the search of his apartment in the Birkenfeld district, the murder weapon as well as other firearms and ammunition were discovered.

According to the current investigation, the 49-year-old does not have a gun license.

How he got the guns is still unclear.

The criminal police and the responsible public prosecutor's office now hope that an evaluation of the man's smartphone that has been seized will bring new details to light.

For example, it is unclear whether his act actually happened so spontaneously - or whether it was planned for a longer period of time.

In addition, it must be determined where and to what extent the 49-year-old radicalized.

A man kills because he doesn't want to wear a mask.

What does that say about the mood in our society?
