Covid-19 could pose a major threat to men's health, a Munich urologist feared.

He speaks of "significant erectile dysfunction".

An infection with the coronavirus can have a wide variety of effects. Some feel absolutely nothing, others report flu-like symptoms. Still others become seriously ill, suffer from shortness of breath and have to be artificially ventilated in the hospital.

So far, researchers have already been able to detect corona-related damage to the lungs, pancreas or vascular system

. The latter also worries urologists who specialize in the treatment of male reproductive organs.

Vascular inflammation can also lead to erectile dysfunction, as the Munich urologist Axel-Jürg Potempa informs in the context of the Fact Fox information series of the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation (BR).

The doctor assumes that soon more men with potency problems will come to his practice after a corona infection

.

To date, he has treated over 50 patients "who developed significant erectile dysfunction six months after the coronavirus disease had ended," according to Potempa BR24.

Erection problems due to Corona: how high is the risk?

"Whether erectile dysfunction in connection with Covid-19 can really be proven robustly, I think it's still too early today," said Christoph Spinner, infectiologist and pandemic officer at the Rechts der Isar Clinic in Munich. Other doctors also point out

that a connection between Covid-19 and erectile dysfunction as a result has not yet been scientifically proven

, as the BR further informs.

Meanwhile, the urological research group reports on a pilot study by US researchers who have looked at the subject. According to them, Covid-19 can cause endothelial dysfunction in organ systems beyond the lungs and kidneys.

The dysfunction of the blood vessels that result from a corona infection can also lead to erectile dysfunction if the penis is no longer supplied with sufficient blood

. However, the pilot study, which only includes two test subjects, is not representative. Further studies with more participants must follow in order to prove or rule out a causal connection between a corona infection and erectile dysfunction.

Erectile dysfunction triggered by a corona infection?

According to Severin Rodler, urologist at the University of Munich Hospital, there are "very, very good reasons why that could be the case," as the BR quotes him.

Because erectile dysfunction would often result from vascular damage, for example from high blood pressure or diabetes

, it goes on to say: "Exactly this vascular damage also occurs with Covid-19," says Rodler.
