Impressive assembly of mummies in Draguignan

300 desiccated remains of men and beasts tell their long story. Revealing in passing some of their secrets.


They came, they are all here.

Assembled in whole or in part under the direction of Philippe Charlier, specialist in forensic medicine, archaeologist, anthropologist and, since 2018, director of research at the Musée du quai Branly, 300 desiccated remains of men and animals tell, in Draguignan, their long story.

Revealing in passing some of their secrets.

From the left foot of the Tollund man, dating from the Iron Age and discovered in 1950 in a bog (Silkeborg Museum, Denmark), to an Egyptian crocodile wrapped in linen bandages;

from a Peruvian funerary package to a reliquary from the Old Regime, a number of vanished cultures are shed light.

From those on the banks of the Nile to the Andes, Amazon, Asia, Oceania or Africa, we take stock of the variety of embalming techniques and rituals.

But still: we learn a lot about the beliefs and the conditions of life (and death) that founded them.
