Munich

- The Berchtesgadener Land * is back where it actually never wanted to be again: at the top of the incidence statistics of the Robert Koch Institute *.

For the first time since May, the incidence in the southeastern corner of Germany has climbed to over 300 again.

One reason for this is the number of infections among younger people.

"We record more than half of our new infections in schools and day-care centers," says District Office spokeswoman Alexandra Rothenbuchner.

Corona in Bavaria: The incidence among adolescents is 500

After the first few weeks of the new school year, it has been shown that the virus is currently particularly rampant among children and adolescents. The Robert Koch Institute has evaluated the seven-day incidence * among ten to 19 year olds. According to this, the incidence in eight districts and one urban district is more than 500. These include the Bavarian districts of Berchtesgadener Land, Traunstein and Straubing-Bogen and the city of Rosenheim.

Markus Gnad is the headmaster at the Chiemgau-Gymnasium in Traunstein, i.e. in one of the regions affected. He says: "We always have cases at school, but when you hear about these high numbers, there are actually relatively few." It is noticeable that there were hardly any infections at school. "In this school year we had exactly one proven infection at school - and it happened on a trip to the get-to-know days," says Gnad. Otherwise, the students would have been infected mainly in the family or in their free time. “That shows that our hygiene concepts work.” And although the first wave of colds has now rolled in and the norovirus is also rampant, regular classes can take place to a large extent. Grace did not hear any greater worries from the parents."What I hear from the parents' council, everyone is happy that the children can go to school again."

Health Department: No age group is tested so intensively

Wolfgang Krämer, head of the Traunstein health department, points out that there has not been a single hospitalization in the age group from zero to 19 years in his district in recent weeks.

The high number of infections is also due to the fact that no age group is tested as intensively as the schoolchildren.

"Even if the numbers sound high: Less than one percent of the students in the district are affected."

The quarantine rate of around 1.6 million schoolchildren across Bavaria is currently 0.48 percent, the Ministry of Culture announced when asked.

This means that it has risen compared to the end of September (0.31 percent at the time).

A year ago, however, it was significantly higher at 1.17 percent.

Corona in Bavaria: Schools must remain open

Michael Hubmann, board member of the professional association of paediatricians in Bavaria, warns of panic in view of the numbers.

"Precisely because we can see the psychological consequences of the lockdown for the children, I think it is important to keep schools and daycare centers open out of solidarity with our children." For children without underlying illnesses, participation in classroom lessons is more important than the risk of infection .

Nevertheless, Headmaster Gnad has an appeal to politicians.

“It would make sense to expand the PCR pool tests to grades five to seven.” The rapid tests currently used there repeatedly filtered out infected people.

"But with the PCR tests we could be even more effective and break the

chains of

infection earlier."
