Nursing staff are rare in Munich.

The SPD and the Greens now not only want to increase the attractiveness of the training occupation, but also to relieve the burden on nurses who are already working.

In an eight-part application package, they demand, among other things, new working time models and more affordable living space.

Inexpensive living space, new working time models, modern sabbatical regulations, improvements in training and new daycare opening hours: the SPD and Green Nurses in the Munich Clinic and inpatient care facilities want to support with an application package. Mayor Verena Dietl and parliamentary group leader Anne Hübner (both SPD) presented an eight-point plan yesterday.

Reduce working hours: Well-trained nurses often left their jobs long before they retired because of the high physical and psychological stress. Therefore, a balance should be created, a model is conceivable where nurses only work 80 percent - but with full pay. In addition, the city should check a lifetime working time account to allow caregivers longer time off or earlier retirement. “New working time models can help,” says Hübner.

Affordable housing: rents and cost of living often deter caregivers from coming to Munich. Therefore, more affordable living space is to be created - close to the workplace, for example on the grounds of the Munich Clinic and Munich Stift. Cooperation with the districts in the S-Bahn catchment area is also conceivable, in order to jointly build apartments there. "We need attractive incentives for nursing staff so that they can afford and organize life in Munich well," said Dietl. . First and foremost, this includes affordable living space.

Daycare places: The daycare opening hours are to be significantly expanded for children of care workers.

“Flexible care times are important.

Because that's the only way to really combine work and family, ”said Dietl.

Shift work in the morning, evening or on the weekend should be less of a problem.

Skilled workers: In the short and medium term, the shortage of employees should also be alleviated by facilitating access to the professional field for foreign skilled workers.

To this end, bureaucratic hurdles are to be dismantled and the city is to become more involved in integration, for example through language courses.

School social work: The school social work at the Academy of Munich Clinic, which is limited to the end of 2021, is to be extended indefinitely.

The social pedagogues support the trainees in their apprenticeship and could help them to get on well with everyday working life.

That minimizes drop-outs.

Health: "Many nurses leave their job early, which is why measures to keep them healthy are incredibly important," says Hübner.

The health department should examine the extent to which the city can promote services such as massages, health days or instructions on back-friendly work techniques.

Supervision: In inpatient facilities there is an offer that nurses are accompanied in their often difficult everyday life.

This is to be extended to the Munich Clinic.

In a moderated dialogue, the teams work together on problem areas and develop long-term solutions.

The federal government has a duty: In order to combat the shortage of skilled workers in the long term, measures at federal and state level are necessary.

The SPD and the Greens are demanding, among other things, 100 percent financing of care costs for hospitals and the abolition of temporary work in the nursing professions.
