(ANSA) - TEL AVIV, 04 OCT - From late afternoon today until tomorrow evening Israel will stop for 25 hours on the occasion of YomKippur (Day of Atonement), the largest religious holiday in the Jewish calendar which includes fasting and reflection.

Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion airport also closed from 2pm today (until tomorrow evening) and all activities in the country, including urban transport.

In the same period of time - as usual - the entrances and exits of the Palestinian Territories, including Gaza, will be stopped.

However, the security forces are on alert given the situation of tension in recent weeks, with numerous attacks on Israeli targets, in the Territories and intelligence warnings of possible further attacks on the occasion of the Jewish holidays which, after Kippur,

they will continue with Sukkot (the Festival of the huts, 9-16 October) to close with Simchat Torah on the 17th.

As always, normal radio and TV programming will be interrupted for the entire duration of Kippur and will resume only at the end of the anniversary.

I also stop all transport (including private ones) with roads and highways invaded by pedestrians and bicycle lovers.

The Waqf - the Islamic religious body - protested today in Jerusalem, according to the Palestinian agency Wafa, for what it called "an assault by settlers protected by the Israeli police" this morning on the Mosschee Esplanade, the Temple Mount for Jews.
