Israel will deliver about a million Pfizer vaccines to the West Bank as part of an exchange deal with the Palestinian Authority, the Prime Minister's Office, the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Health announced in a joint statement today (Friday).

The Prime Minister's Office stated that the decision was made after staff work and in accordance with the recommendation of the Ministries of Defense and Health.

Under the agreement, Israel will deliver to the Palestinian Authority 1-1.4 million doses of vaccine against the coronary virus of the Pfizer company that are in Israel and will expire soon.

According to the agreement, in exchange for vaccines that will be transferred to the Palestinian Authority, Israel will receive the same amount of new vaccine doses from Pfizer during the months of September-October 2021, at the expense of the shipment destined for the PA.

The Prime Minister's Office stated that the outline was approved in light of the fact that the stock of vaccines in Israel's possession meets all the needs today.

According to sources involved in the details of the deal, the vaccine transfer process was approved in principle in the past by former Prime Minister Netanyahu, but the implementation of the move has been delayed.

They added that at this stage, under the agreement, vaccines would be transferred to the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank only, and not to the Gaza Strip.

Negotiations on the agreement began during the previous government and were conducted by Health Ministry Director General Hezi Levy and the head of the ministry's international division, Ashi Shalmon, in front of the Palestinian Authority's corona projector. Levy and Salmon ran the negotiations in coordination with the National Security Council during the former Prime Minister Netanyahu. During the opening meeting between Levy and the new health minister Nitzan Horowitz update the Health Ministry director Horowitz negotiations took place under the previous government.

Officials in the Health Minister It was said that Horowitz called on Levy to push the negotiations with all his might and stressed that at the same time he would raise the issue with Prime Minister Naftali Bennett to get his approval, and on the same day Horowitz called Bennett. The prime minister returned to him within three hours, saying he had no objection in principle, but asked for a final inspection by the National Security Headquarters and the defense establishment. The National Security Council and the Ministry of Defense approved the move.

But then another problem arose.

The agreement with Pfizer does not allow the transfer of vaccines to a third party without the company's approval.

Health officials contacted Pfizer and asked for her approval.

After a short negotiation, the approval was obtained and it was possible to proceed with the agreement. Sources in the Health Minister's office said that some of the vaccine doses, about 100,000, will already be transferred to the Palestinian Authority today. In total, about 1.2 million vaccine doses will be transferred to the authority.
