It's a matter of time before Greece closes: 13 islands have been declared "red" by Europeans

As we posted here two weeks ago, Greece is taking huge steps towards becoming a “red” country, and flying to it will be banned from the country.

The Europeans already declared Rhodes, Mykonos, Santorini and 10 other islands "red" yesterday.

Are you planning to go on holiday in Greece soon? Maybe you should think again. The European Center for Disease Control and Prevention (ECDC) has announced that a number of Greek islands, located in the southern Aegean, have been marked in "dark red" on the map of the corona plague published by the center. The announcement came out yesterday (Thursday), after an increase in infection cases.

The areas marked with this color on the ECDC map help EU decision-makers to identify high-risk areas and take restrictions or actions in relation to them. For example, charging for tests before and after arriving at them, imposing isolation on visitors returning from these destinations and more. Currently, there are 13 islands - many of them popular with tourists in general and Israelis in particular. Among the islands can be found Mykonos, Santorini and Rhodes, which attract millions of travelers from around the world every year.

Greece's Deputy Minister of Civil Defense, Nikos Radlias, said yesterday that Mykonos and Ios, other popular tourist destinations, are also "one step" before authorities impose restrictions, due to the situation.

According to him, the situation is also worrying in the islands of Zakynthos, Tinos, Lefkada, Santorini, Paros and Rhodes.

Will the recovery no longer come?

The Reuters news agency notes that Greece, which is largely dependent on the tourism industry, has relied on promoting "COVID-free" islands in order to attract visitors to vacations this summer, hoping to bring about the industry's recovery after its worst year in decades.

And so, although June 2021 brought with it many visitors to the Greek islands, as well as an expression of optimism on the part of local authorities, uncertainty has now returned to the forefront.

"We are now waiting to see how the tourism markets will react to the situation," said Manolis Markopoulos, president of the Rhodes Hotel Association, referring to the European Center for Disease Control and Prevention's decision.

"More than 90 percent of the island's vacationers are tourists from abroad."

Crete is already "red"

It was also noted that Germany and the United Kingdom are the largest tourist suppliers to the Greek islands.

The first declared Greece a risk zone for Corona earlier this month, and the second now requires the isolation of its returning residents from Greece.

It was also reported that last week, the ECDC decided to "paint" Crete again - the largest island in Greece and a particularly popular destination for Israelis - in dark red.

In this context, it was reported that the Israeli Ministry of Health is seeking to impose additional restrictions on Israelis returning from various countries abroad, with Greece now also "on target." The Corona Cabinet is expected to decide soon.
